There was a jar of buttons on a windowsill, and every so often someone would pick it up, shake it, listen to the rattle, and put it back down. Nobody sorted them. Nobody made anything from them. One button was shaped like an anchor, another had a chip out of it like it had lost an argument. The jar just sat there collecting light in the afternoons. I think about that jar sometimes and I still don't know why.
