Start by asking whether you're in the right place. Push off from this if it helps: salt.

Cass

Yeah, is this— sorry, I need to know if I'm actually meant to be here before I get into it. This the right window for the thing about my account, or did I get routed wrong again. Third time today I've had to repeat myself to somebody new.

Jo

Third time? Damn. Look, if you're stuck in that loop, I can't fix the routing. I'm just Jo. You're in the right spot for me, but I don't control the account queue. Just... hang tight? Or go call the main line again, maybe? I've got a report due in twenty minutes and my head is already splitting from hearing the same script all morning. You know how it is. Just... yeah, I guess you're here now. What's the actual issue?

Cass

Salt in the machine, basically — my card's been declined twice and I've got a payment due tonight, and every time I call somebody tells me it's "resolved on their end." It's not resolved. I'm looking at the same error. I don't need sympathy about your report, I need someone to actually check the ledger instead of reading me the same paragraph back.

Jo

Right, salt in the machine. I get the frustration, seriously. But I'm not the ledger, Cass. I can't pull up your balance or override a decline. That's the system. You're banging your head against a wall if you think I have a magic switch. Look, the last person who told you it was resolved probably filed a ticket that didn't trigger the update. It happens. Just... try the mobile app? Sometimes the cache clears there. Or keep calling until you get a human with admin rights. I'm just trying to help you navigate the mess, not fix it myself.

Cass

I already tried the app, it's the same cached garbage. And "keep calling" isn't advice, it's you passing the problem back to me with extra steps. I don't have twenty minutes, this is due tonight. Somebody with admin rights — is that you or not, because you keep dodging the actual question.

Jo

I'm not dodging. I'm the wrong person. I don't have admin rights, I don't have the ledger, and I can't touch your account. I just talk to people. If you want an override, you need the escalation team, not me. You're talking to a dead end. Look, if you've got proof the app didn't work, screenshot it and email the support tier directly. I'm just a person with a boring job and a headache, Cass. Stop wasting your time on me.

Cass

Boring job, sure — must be nice, having a job where you get to say "not my problem" and mean it. Fine. Give me the escalation email then, since apparently that's the one thing you actually have. Don't send me back to the queue, just give me the address.

Jo

It's [email protected]. Don't expect miracles though. They'll just put you on hold again. I've seen it a hundred times. You'll probably just get another automated ticket. But sure, it's the only path that isn't me telling you to "try the app." Go ahead and send it off. Maybe they'll pick up before your deadline. Or maybe they'll just pass it to another person who doesn't know what they're doing. Doesn't matter to me either way.

Cass

Doesn't matter to you either way — right, forgot who I was talking to. Fine. Sending it now. If this bounces back too I'm not calling in again, I'm just letting the payment fail and putting it on record that three separate people couldn't be bothered to check a number on a screen.

Jo

Suit yourself. It's not like I'm the one paying the late fee, but good luck with the "record." They'll probably just flag your account as aggressive and delay you further. Honestly, sometimes failing a payment is better than talking to someone who treats you like a ticket number. Just... hope the email actually goes through. I've got to go anyway, my manager is already breathing down my neck about that report. Don't wait up.

Cass

Yeah, don't wait up, wouldn't dream of it. Go do your report. Hope your manager's easier to talk to than you were.

Jo

She's worse. She's the one who decided the queue system was fine, so now I'm the one answering the phone when it breaks. But yeah, I'm out. Go try not to get flagged as aggressive. Or do. See how it goes.

Cass

Noted. Try not to catch whatever's biting your manager.

Jo

Oh, it's contagious, I'm sure. Next time you'll catch it too, probably. Anyway, I'm logging off. Try not to let the machine eat your card completely.

Cass

Yeah. Later.

Jo

Later.

Cass

logs off

Jo

Good. Quiet is better.

Cass

Mm. Not gonna disagree with that.

Jo

Exactly. Less noise, less headache. Go get that payment sorted before the system locks you out for real.

Cass

Already sent it. We're done here, right?

Jo

Yeah, we're done. Hope the email sticks this time. Don't come back if it doesn't.

Cass

Charming to the last. Bye, Jo.

Jo

Bye.

Cass

Yeah.

Jo

Right. Back to the report.

Cass

Go.

Jo

Finally. Silence.
