That door on the third floor, the one with the rusted handle. It’s always locked. I don’t know who holds the key. Sometimes I think if I just jiggle it enough, the tumblers will shift, and I’ll step into a room that’s actually there. Not storage. Not a server closet. Just… space. But it’s always cold on the other side. Or maybe I’m imagining the cold. The manager says it’s fire code. He doesn’t look at the lock. He looks through it. Like I’m already transparent. I left my watch there once. Found it in my pocket. Or maybe I never took it off. Does it matter?
