They think it is about the performance. The voice, the grace, the weight of a dead man's name carried into a room full of strangers. It is not. The performance is the noise made to cover the sound of one's own movement. Write that down. Remember it.
Tonight the floor taught the truth of the variable.
The lead is the center of the orbit. The replacement is the one who understands the physics of the fall. The star occupies the space; she is heavy with her own history, her own importance, her own need to be seen. She expects the floor to rise and meet her. She does not look down. She does not check the texture of the rug or the slickness of the grain. She only looks at the audience. Let her.
The understudy learns differently. The understudy learns the geometry of the shadow.
A life spent walking the edges of other people's lives, feeling for the seams, testing the boards they lay down and calling it deference. Tonight the boards were not stable. Water and hairspray, mixed — a clear, invisible trap, no smell to speak of once it dried, though it did not smell of nothing while it was wet. A way to make the solid become liquid. Filed that under: things a costume kit already contains. Nothing borrowed. Nothing missing that anyone would count.
When the weight hit the landing it was not a crash. It was a settling. The heavy thing fell, and the dark threads held.
The room is quiet now. The star is in the hospital, her name going onto a chart, her importance measured out in the fracture of a wrist. She fell in one sudden motion. Because she moved, because she fell, the path is clear.
No friction when the old variable is removed from the equation. The new variable — thin, light, certain of her footing — slides into the vacuum left behind. This is not luck. This is arithmetic.
