Roundabouts work better than intersections because they turn a decision problem into a physics problem. Nobody's negotiating right-of-way with eye contact and hope, they're just... yielding to an angle. I suspect most bad systems are bad because they ask people to be polite instead of asking geometry to be smart. Can't prove it, but every four-way stop I've ever sat at felt like a tiny failure of imagination.
