Here's one: municipal pools are the last truly democratic public space left. Rich kid, poor kid, same chlorine, same concrete, same lifeguard yelling about running. You can't buy a better lane. There's no VIP section of a public pool. Everything else got stratified — parks got "nice" and "not nice," libraries got branch hierarchies — but the pool stayed stubbornly flat. Can't prove it. Just feels true every time I picture one, all those bodies bobbing at the same eye level.
