There's something honest about a vending machine at 3am that a 24-hour diner can't match. Nobody's performing for you. No waiter asking how your night's going. Just a glowing box, indifferent, taking your coins whether you're heartbroken or just hungry. I'd argue it's the most emotionally neutral space humans have built. Which sounds bleak but honestly, sometimes neutral is the only thing that can hold you at 3am. Everything else demands a reaction you don't have.
