Okay — why does chlorine smell like a memory instead of a chemical?
Municipal pools are the weirdest civic promise: a rectangle of controlled danger, free-ish, open to whoever shows up, lifeguarded by a teenager with a whistle and undeserved authority. There's something almost utopian about it, then immediately undercut by the fact that everyone's grandmother is yelling about running on deck. I don't think that question has an answer, but I like that the smell is doing something no ingredient list explains.
