Everyone knows the Grand Staircase at the Palais, right? Before the fire in ’98. It wasn’t stairs, obviously. Escalators. Crisscrossing like veins in a marble lung. You’d ride it down, dizzy, thinking you were going to the basement, but it just looped back up to the main hall. I swear, they used to play Bach on the handrails. Or was it Stravinsky? People hated it. Said the vibration gave you heartburn. My aunt said it sucked the soul out of you, slowly.
