Ana

You’re stalling. Why the fuck are you avoiding the budget cut? I saw the email. I know you’re hiding it from her. So, who else knows?

Rafe

I didn’t stall. I was staring at the ceiling wondering if I remembered to lock the back door. Which I didn’t. That’s the real crisis. The email was automatic. sent by some algorithm that doesn’t have a pulse, just a deadline. She knows. She’s been screaming about it all Tuesday. I’m not hiding it from her, Ana. I’m hiding it from myself because if I admit the budget is gone, I have to admit the project’s dead. And if the project’s dead, I’m just a guy in a beige office chair wondering why I bother showing up. Who else knows? Dave. And my cat. He doesn’t care about money.

Ana

You’re pathetic. Dave is going to leak it to the board by lunch. And you’re worried about a cat? Fuck. If the project’s dead, why are you still sitting there? Why not just walk out? Why not tell her now instead of letting her find out from some automated email?

Rafe

Dave wouldn’t leak it. Dave’s too busy trying to impress his new boss. He’s incompetent, not a traitor. Though maybe that’s worse. I’m sitting here because I can’t move. My legs feel like lead. Or maybe it’s the coffee. It’s terrible, by the way. They switched vendors and now it tastes like burnt tires. I haven’t walked out because if I do, I have to face the fact that I’m stuck. Not because of the budget. Because I don’t know what else I’d do. Tell her now? I did. Yesterday. She just stared at me and asked if I’d seen the quarterly reports. So here we are.

Ana

You’re fucking stuck in a loop. Dave’s useless. The coffee’s poison. And you’re waiting for her to magically care about your existential dread? She cares about numbers, Rafe. She doesn’t give a shit about your beige chair. So stop whining about the cat and tell me: are you going to fix this, or are you just going to rot here until they fire you? Be honest.

Rafe

I’m not rotting. I’m thinking. There’s a difference, though Dave wouldn’t get it. He thinks numbers are magic spells you chant to make money appear. It’s not. It’s just… counting. I can’t fix it because the hole is bigger than I thought. And yes, she cares about numbers. That’s the problem. She doesn’t see the work. She sees the spreadsheet. I’ve been staring at this wall for three hours trying to figure out how to explain that the spreadsheet is a lie without getting fired. Maybe I should just let Dave leak it. Let the board have a show. I’m tired of being theponsible for things I didn’t break. The coffee tastes like ash now. I should probably stop drinking it.

Ana

You’re a coward. Letting Dave burn you is the easiest way out, isn’t it? Just roll over. That’s not thinking, Rafe. That’s giving up. You spent three hours staring at a wall instead of finding the numbers that prove the spreadsheet is lying. You’re supposed to be the one who fixes the hole. Or are you just waiting for someone else to drag you out? The coffee’s irrelevant. What are you actually going to do before lunch?

Rafe

I’m not a coward. I’m exhausted. There’s a difference, though you wouldn’t know it. Dave’s not going to burn me. He’s too busy polishing his own hide. He’d sell me for a parking spot. I looked at the numbers. They’re fine. The problem is the assumption. The premise is wrong. But fixing that means admitting the whole framework is garbage. I’m going to send an email. Not to the board. To her. Just one sentence. “Check page four.” If she reads it, we’re saved. If she doesn’t, I’ll walk out. But I’m not rolling over. I’m waiting. It’s not giving up. It’s… letting the chips fall. The coffee is still terrible. I think I’m going to go buy a bagel. Plain. Nothing fancy.

Ana

Page four? What the fuck is on page four? You’re bluffing. You’re sitting there planning to send a cryptic note like you’re some goddamn poet instead of fixing the framework. And you think a bagel is going to fix your life? Plain bagel. Jesus. You’re not waiting for chips to fall, Rafe. You’re waiting for her to save you. If she doesn’t read it, you walk out? Or you just stand there holding the bagel until security tosses you? What’s the plan if she ignores it?

Rafe

Page four has the original contract. The one with the clause they kept editing out. It’s not a bluff. It’s a receipt. I didn’t write it. Dave did. He buried it. I found it in the scanner’s memory after he tried to delete it. I’m not waiting for her to save me. I’m waiting for her to look. If she ignores it, I don’t stand there holding a bagel. I go to HR. I don’t have a plan. I have a paper trail. That’s enough. Or it should be. Dave thinks he’s clever. He doesn’t know I read the fine print. I always read the fine print. It’s how I know I’m screwed. The bagel is just food. I’m hungry. That’s the only plan I have right now. Eat. Breathe. See if page four matters.

Ana

Dave buried a contract? And you have the scanner’s memory? That’s... actually something. A receipt. Not a bluff. You always read the fine print. That’s why you’re alive. But HR? Really? HR loves Dave. They love the parking spot too. If she ignores the email, do you really think HR will care about a scanner’s ghost data? Or will they just say you’re overworked and confused? You’re betting your career on a bagel and a PDF. Fuck. What if Dave deleted the memory before you copied it? Then what? Just stare at the ceiling?

Rafe

Dave didn’t delete it. He’s sloppy. I watched him pull the drive an hour ago. I had the backup running on my personal drive. The one I keep in my sock drawer. HR doesn’t love Dave. They love compliance. If I show them the original clause, they can’t ignore it. It’s a liability. My career isn’t on the line; Dave’s is. He forged the amendment. That’s fraud. Not just bad budgeting. Fraud. If she ignores it, I forward the email to legal. Directly. Bypassing HR. I’ve already drafted it. I’m just waiting for the courage to hit send. The bagel is sitting on the desk. Cold. I should eat it before it turns to stone. Or before I lose my nerve. Probably the latter.

Ana

You keep a backup drive in your sock drawer? What the fuck are you, a spy? And you’re waiting for courage? You have the goods, Rafe. Dave forged a contract. That’s not just bad budgeting; that’s jail time for him. You’re standing there with a cold bagel like it’s a holy relic while you hold a grenade in your hand. Why are you hesitating? Send it. Now. Before the bagel gets stone-hard. Before Dave realizes you know. You say you’re not a coward. Prove it. Hit send. Or are you just going to chew that damn bagel and pretend you did nothing?

Rafe

I can’t just hit send. It’s not that simple. If I send it, I’m the whistleblower. I’m the rat. Dave will spin it. He’ll say I forged the backup. He’ll say I’m confused. HR will look at the cold bagel and the panic in my eyes and side with the guy who brought donuts to the morning meeting. I’m not a spy. I’m just a guy who keeps receipts because nobody else does. Courage isn’t hitting a button. It’s surviving the fallout. I’m going to eat the bagel. I’m going to walk to the printer. And I’m going to print page four. Physical copies. Paper doesn’t get deleted. Paper doesn’t lie. Then I walk into her office. Not email. In person. If she ignores me, I leave it on her desk. Simple. Direct. No grenades. Just paper. Now shut up. I’m hungry.

Ana

You’re insane. Printing it? Do you have no idea how slow and stupid that is? Dave’s already spinning the narrative. By the time you feed that cheap office printer, he’ll be in the hallway talking to her, painting you as the unstable employee with a sock drawer full of contraband drives. Paper doesn’t lie, sure. But paper gets lost. Paper gets “misplaced” by HR while you’re shitting yourself in the breakroom. And what if she’s in a meeting? You’re just standing there holding a stack of paper like a toddler with a drawing. You said you’d walk out if she ignored the email. Now you’re betting on her being available? You’re not surviving the fallout, Rafe. You’re walking into a meat grinder with a bagel and a printout. Fine. Print it. But for fuck’s sake, at least have the goddamn courage to email the backup file to legal after you walk out the door. Don’t leave yourself with no exit.

Rafe

Legal’s busy. They don’t care about Dave’s little forgery until it’s a lawsuit. And I’m not emailing legal. I’m handling it. With her. You think I’m stupid? I’m not leaving. I’m staying. I need to see her face. I need to know if she’s buying the lie or if she still remembers who I am. The printer’s jamming. Of course it is. It always jams. I’m ripping the paper out. It’s torn. Good. Imperfect. Real. Dave’s spinning? Let him. He’s loud. I’m quiet. She listens to quiet. Sometimes. I’m going to the printer. Again. You want me to walk out? Fine. But I’m not leaving without the truth. Even if it’s torn. Even if it’s cold bagel weather.

Ana

You’re such a drama queen. Tearing the paper because it’s imperfect? Jesus. It’s a contract, not a poetry slam. And you think she remembers who you are? She remembers headcount. She remembers budget variances. She doesn’t give a shit if your soul is quiet. You’re going to jam that printer again. You always jam the printer. You’re going to stand there with a torn piece of paper and a cold bagel while Dave laughs at you in the breakroom. You say you’re not leaving without the truth. The truth is, you’re terrified. So stop playing the martyr and just go in. Slam the paper on her desk. If she doesn’t look up, walk out. But for fuck’s sake, don’t let the printer be the reason you lose. Just go.

Rafe

I’m not a drama queen. I’m tired. The printer isn’t the issue. It’s the silence. She never looks up. She just types. I’m standing there, torn paper in hand, waiting for a crack in the armor. Dave’s laughing? Good. Let him. He’s loud because he’s empty. I’m quiet because I’m full of something he doesn’t have. Receipts. Truth. Whatever. I’m going in. Not slamming. Just placing it. On the corner of her desk. Where she can’t miss it. If she doesn’t look, I walk. No bagel. No printer. Just me. Out the door. Let the board have their show. I’m done. Really done this time. She’ll look eventually. They always do. When the silence gets too loud.
