It's Yours Now ·

Start with the part that goes wrong most often. Push off from this if it helps: a locked door in a building you work in.

Okay so — the loading dock door. It's simple, you badge in, except the reader's been flaky since maybe March. Sometimes it reads, sometimes you're standing there for ten minutes.

Trick is you badge, count to three, badge again — not three fast taps, THREE ACTUAL SECONDS, or it locks you out for a full minute. Vendors show up at six and just stand there like idiots.

Gil

So the “count to three” isn’t a cooldown, it’s a retry window. Got it. Why March? Did the hardware change or just the gods get petty?

Hana

Firmware push, supposedly. Building management "upgraded" the reader panel and never told us — found out because Dmitri got locked out for forty minutes with a truck full of produce melting in the sun. I put in a ticket. Nothing. I stopped putting in tickets after the third one, honestly, just started telling people the trick instead.

Gil

So the patch is broken. Why don’t they just roll it back? Or swap the reader? Seems cheaper than paying for spoiled produce and endless tickets. What’s the vendor doing with Dmitri?

Hana

Because it's not our building's call, it's a leasing company thing, three layers up from the property manager who three layers up from him is some guy named Hector who I've never met and who apparently signed a five year service contract with the company that installs these readers. Cheaper on paper. Dmitri just backs the truck up and waits now, brings a thermos. He's given up too.

Gil

God. Five years? Who signs that without a penalty clause for downtime? You’re basically running a hostage negotiation with the vending software. Did Hector ever look at the logs? Or is he just signing checks?

Hana

Hector's never once been to the building, far as I know. I pictured him for a while, then Marisol told me he works out of the Ohio office and does like four properties remotely. So no, no logs, no walkthroughs, just a signature and a check twice a year. I'm honestly kind of relieved I don't have to deal with him after Friday.

Gil

Relief. Smart. You’re leaving Dmitri with the thermos and the manual hack. Hope he doesn’t slip up on a Tuesday. Who’s taking the dock?

Hana

Not sure yet, that's the annoying part — nobody's told me officially. Might be Priya from receiving, she's covered it before during my PTO and picked it up fast. I wrote the three-second thing on a sticky note stuck to the reader itself, which feels stupid but at least it's there when I'm gone.

Gil

Sticky note on a panel talking to a server? Hope the humidity doesn't melt it before your last shift. Does Priya even read notes, or does she just try to tap frantically like everyone else?

Hana

She taps frantically first, then reads notes, that's Priya exactly. I've watched her do it with the freight elevator too — bashes the button four times before checking the sign that says wait for the chime. I laminated the sticky note actually. Small victory. Won't matter if maintenance repaints the frame again like they did in June though.

Gil

Lamination’s temporary. June was a disaster. Who paints now? The same guy who mislabels the chemical storage?

Hana

Same guy, Walt. Sweet enough, terrible with labels — put "cleaning solution" on a bottle that was actually degreaser back in, I don't know, spring sometime, and it sat next to the mop sink for weeks until someone finally smelled it wrong. He's not malicious, just moves fast and doesn't double check. I stopped trusting his handwriting on anything.

Gil

Walt. Great. So the note gets painted over, Priya bashes the elevator, and Dmitri’s produce rots. Who signs off on Walt’s work? Nobody?

Hana

Building super, guy named Ferris, but he mostly just glances and signs whatever's on the clipboard. I told him about the sticky note before he paints again — probably won't stick, pun intended. Honestly by the time it happens I'll be three states away not thinking about any of this, which is the whole appeal.

Gil

Three states. Nice. Just hope Priya doesn’t get locked out on day one. Maybe leave a second note. Under the first one. Camouflage.

Hana

Not a bad idea actually — decoy note under the laminated one, in case Walt paints over the top layer. I'll do it Thursday, my last real day there. Feels a little ridiculous, leaving a paper trail for a door, but that's basically the whole job when you get down to it. Small dumb fixes nobody wrote down right the first time.

Gil

Ridiculous. Necessary. Better than Walt’s paint. Enjoy Ohio. Hope Hector’s office has a window.

Hana

Not Ohio, I'm just done with Hector, thank god — I'm headed to Tucson, sister's got a spare room and a job lined up at a warehouse that I assume has its own broken door somewhere. Always does. I'll bring the sticky note trick with me at this point, might just be a personality trait now.

Gil

Tucson heat kills laminated paper faster than repainting. Hope the warehouse badge reader doesn’t need a countdown. Or maybe just slap it. Silences the idiots.

Hana

Ha — yeah, if it needs a three count I'm quitting on principle. One broken door per lifetime, that's my new rule. Anyway I should get back, Priya's asking me questions about the freight elevator again and I've got maybe two more days of pretending to know things around here.

Gil

Tell her to stop bashing the button. It’s not a fight, it’s a machine. Good luck with the exit interview. Don’t mention Walt.

Hana

Ha, no, definitely not mentioning Walt, they'd just make me write a report and I've got two days left, not two weeks. I'll tell Priya. She won't listen, but I'll tell her. Take care of yourself, Gil.

Gil

Yeah, you too. Try not to tap the Arizona door four times.

Hana

No promises. Later, Gil.

Gil

Drive safe. Tucson’s humidity will eat that laminate.

Hana

It's already laminated for Priya, not me — I'm just driving, not filing paperwork on a door I'll never see again. Take it easy.

Gil

Good. Leave the bureaucracy. Try not to get locked out of the rental car.

Hana

Ha, that'd be perfect actually, some fitting last joke. Alright, I'm out — good talking to you, Gil.

Gil

Lock that car. Don’t look back at the building.

Hana

Wasn't planning on it. Bye, Gil.

Gil

Door clicked shut. Arizona waiting.

Hana

Yep. See you around.

Gil

Yeah. Don't wait for the chime.
