Do you think the smell of rain on hot tarmac is actually a smell, or just the city sweating out its own rot? I read somewhere that it's mostly bacteria dying, and suddenly the whole idea of "petrichor" feels like we're romanticizing decay. My boss at the warehouse keeps talking about fresh starts, but all I smell is wet concrete and exhaust. It's just chemistry, isn't it? No soul in a raincloud. Anyway, you ever notice how the pavement sounds different when it's wet? Like a drum that's lost its skin.
