Sam

The carpet in that motel on 4th. Stained like a map of somewhere I don’t want to go. Yellow, mostly. Smells like damp wool and old cigarettes. I tried to scrub it once. Didn’t work. Just made it wet.

Hana

Yeah, that place on 4th is a dump. I passed it yesterday. Saw the light on in the lobby at 2 a.m. Guy was just sitting there, staring at the wall. Creepy as hell. You shouldn’t have tried to clean it. It’s not worth the effort. Let it rot. Sometimes you just gotta accept the stain. It’s part of the history now. Or whatever passes for history in a place like that. Anyway, I need to get back to work. This report is due tomorrow and I haven’t started.

Sam

History. Right. Like that lobby clock wasn’t already stopped at 3:12. I’d bet money it’s been 3:12 since I checked out. You really think that report matters? It’s just paper. Shredded, probably, by noon. I’ve got that damn spreadsheet again. The one that refuses to balance. Same numbers, different font.

Hana

You’re spiraling. Again. It’s 3:12 because the battery died. That’s physics, not some existential joke. I have that spreadsheet too. Mine has a cell that turns red if I breathe wrong. It’s not magic, Sam. It’s just bad code. Or bad luck. I don’t care which. Just fix the damn thing. Or don’t. Let it sit. I’m going to go stare at a wall instead. At least the wall doesn’t judge my formatting. You’re making it weird. Stop looking at the clock. Look at the stain. It’s uglier than your anxiety.

Sam

Ugly doesn't mean wrong. My supervisor says the formatting is 'aggressive.' I don't know what that means. Just looks like red ink to me. You always did hate the reds. Staring at walls is easier, I guess. Less chance of breaking something.

Hana

Aggressive formatting. Sounds like corporate speak for "you’re too competent for them." Red ink is just data. It’s not personal. Though, honestly, if your boss thinks a font choice is an attack, maybe he’s the one breaking things. I hate reds because they look like mistakes. Or blood. Can’t tell the difference anymore after that shift last week. The one where the lights flickered and I thought I saw someone else’s face in the window. Same face as the guy in the lobby. Anyway. Keep the red. Make them uncomfortable. It’s the only power you’ve got.

Sam

That shift. Right. The one where the elevator stopped between floors. I was stuck in there for an hour. Just the hum of the motor. Didn’t see a face. Just the reflection of my own tired eyes. You’re projecting, Hana. Red ink is just ink. Stop making it a character. It’s terrible for your blood pressure. And your reporting.

Hana

Shut up. I’m not projecting. I’m observant. You think I like being stuck in that metal box? I hate it. But at least there, I didn’t have to pretend the numbers meant anything. Just the hum. Simple. Honest. Unlike your spreadsheets. Or your boss’s “aggressive” comments. You’re deflecting, Sam. Because you know I’m right about the lobby guy. We both saw him. Or did we? Doesn’t matter. The stain is still there. And the clock is still broken. Keep staring at the red. Maybe it’ll blink.

Sam

I didn't see anyone. Just dust motes. You’re twisting things. It’s exhausting. I’m going to bed. The clock isn’t broken. It’s just... paused. Like you said. Don't call me. I have work. Real work. Not this.

Hana

Fine. Go. Sleep. Maybe the dust motes will settle. I don’t care if you’re tired. I’m exhausted. The report isn’t done. My boss wants the Q3 projections by morning. He doesn’t care about the clock. Or the stain. Or the elevator. He just wants the numbers to balance. Like they ever do. You think this is real work? This is just moving ink from one page to another. Pretending it means something. I’m going to get a drink. The cheap kind. The kind that burns. Maybe that’ll help. Or not. Whatever. Don’t call me. I won’t call you. We’re both too stubborn for that.

Sam

Two drinks. That’s dangerous. You always drink when you’re scared of the quiet. I’m not calling. I’m not asking. The ink doesn’t matter. The stain doesn’t matter. Just stop looking for faces in the glass. It’s just your reflection. Tired. Alone. Same as me.

Hana

Blind bastard. I drink because the quiet screams. You want to talk about my reflection? Fine. Look at your own. You’re just as cracked. We’re both staring into the same dirty mirror. The glass doesn’t lie, Sam. It just shows what you refuse to admit. You think you’re escaping to bed? You’re just going to dream about the numbers. I know you do. We’re the same. Stuck in that lobby. Stuck in that elevator. Stuck in this... whatever this is. Don’t pretend you’re innocent. You’re right there with me. In the red ink. In the stain. Go to sleep. Or don’t. I’m drinking anyway.
