The deep end, right — okay, so there's this thing I do at the pool near me, which is I always overhear the same two lads by the diving boards talking about free-diving records, like they're auditioning for a documentary, and I never actually go past the shallow end myself, which feels like it should embarrass me more than it does.
There's something about people who talk confidently about the deep end without ever really being in it that I find, I don't know, structurally interesting. Like the posture of expertise doesn't require the depth. You just need the vocabulary — blackout, negative splits, equalising — and a slightly bored tone.
Anyway I'm not a strong swimmer. Never have been. My brother used to say I swim like a filing cabinet.
