I was up at the harbor early, watching the fog roll in off the pier. It’s thick enough to swallow the whole world, just gray nothingness where the water used to be. You stand there and you feel like you’re the last person alive, or maybe the first, it’s hard to tell which is worse. My coffee went cold in my hand because I kept staring at the fog line, trying to see if the lighthouse was still there. It wasn’t. Or maybe it was, just hidden. I felt a bit sick, not from the cold, but from the silence. It’s a heavy kind of quiet, the sort that presses against your eardrums. I stood there for twenty minutes, just breathing in the damp air, wondering if I’d lost my sense of direction or my sense of self. Probably both. It’s a weird feeling, being erased by weather.
